It is five and a half years since I took up the study of Christian Science. I had been sick before this time, for thirteen years, with nervous and catarrhal trouble of the head, throat, and stomach. I was very deaf and could talk but little as my throat was so badly affected, and I could not eat much although I had a great craving for food. During this time I had been treated by six different doctors, only to grow worse right along. I had been a church member off and on all my life, and could not understand why I did not get well. About two years before I took up Christian Science, I concluded I was called to preach, so I thought if God wanted me to preach He would heal me. I then took up "faith cure" and went away to school to study for the ministry. My faith seemed to stop the progress of the disease for a while, but with hard studying the same conditions returned, only worse than before. This was quite a shock to my faith in the justice of God, and I then gave up all thought of preaching and went back to my old work. A short time after this I began to take medicine again.

About this time my uncle came from Colorado and told me about Christian Science, but I did not believe in it or want it just then. I finished taking the medicine I had on hand (was taking twelve doses a day) but was getting worse all the time. To mortal view my case seemed incurable. It was either death or Christian Science, and that soon! A few weeks after, I stopped medicine and began taking absent treatment from a Christian Science practitioner and was benefited at once. I then began to eat whatever I wanted, and have been able to do so ever since with no bad effects. From being a weak, puny man I have grown strong and my health is better now than it has been for twenty years. I can do double the amount of work that I used to do. My progress has been slow at times, but I see now that it was for the best. I have not yet overcome all sense of disease, but Mrs. Eddy says, on page 571 of Science and Health, "Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil." So I know that everything will be right. I am thankful not only for the physical healing but also for the spiritual uplifting.

Paul's words mean much in Christian Science: "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God." I am now prepared to help others as well as myself in a better manner than before. I thank God for His love and guidance, and Mrs. Eddy for her noble life-work.—Henry Caldwell, Montesano, Wash.

This is to certify that I have known Henry Caldwell for about twenty years. He was afflicted many years and doctored with but little success. The first time I saw him after he went to Christian Science for help was over four years ago. His looks told me without words that he was well. He looks a picture of health since that time, and his work shows that he is well. He induced me to try Christian Science more by his looks than his words.

I wish to express through the columns of the Sentinel my gratitude for what Christian Science has accomplished for me. What little knowledge I have of Christian Science is worth more to me than anything I ever possessed, and my greatest desire is to know more of this truth and be able to use it effectually for the benefit of mankind,—wherever I go and for all with whom I come in contact. Through the assistance of friends who are Christian Scientists, my life was spared and my freedom gained when these had been despaired of. Through this experience I was permitted to see the spiritual meaning of Life as I never saw it before, and therefore for me life came to be more worth the living. Christian Science has taught me to strive for the highest and best that can be attained in all things,—the good and the true. I surely should be grateful for these blessings, and for the knowledge which Mrs. Eddy has offered us all if we will but accept it. She has certainly accomplished a noble work, which is steadily moving on and will continue so to do; and so faithful an instrument in the hands of God for the betterment of the world will be protected by Him always.

When but a child I joined an orthodox church, to which my parents belonged, but as I grew to years of understanding I realized more and more that I was not in sympathy with its teachings, and I began to investigate other religious beliefs, to learn if possible where I did belong; but I found no place where I felt at home until I came in contact with the teachings of Christian Science. I was finally convinced that Christian Science is the truth, and it was plainly shown me that my church home should be with the Christian Scientists. With them I shall continue to work and live, God being my guide.
