The collapse of the case that was brought against...

Columbus (O.) Dispatch

The collapse of the case that was brought against Mary Baker Eddy, head of the Christian Science Church, by her son and other "next friends," to require an accounting of her estate, will bring regret to few persons, if any. The suit was sensational because it attacked a creed, and those who do not accept the creed may have expected that the suit would reveal new justification for their rejection of it. But there has never been any widespread sympathy with the son who seemed to be striving to get property to which he had no right, because, if it did not belong to Mrs. Eddy, it belonged to those who had contributed it to the Cause. Besides, he seemed to be actuated by his love of money, rather than by such reverence for his mother and concern for her condition as were to have been expected from him. The litigation has failed chiefly because it deserved to fail.
