It is about five years since I first knew of Christian Science. I had heard of it three years before, but was not interested enough to investigate at that time. I was finally brought into Science through the healing of my husband. The practitioner told me to read to him from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, whenever he could listen, and as I was very anxious to do all I could for him, I read almost constantly, having no other object in so doing except his benefit. In reading to him I was as faithful as I had been in giving him the medicine prescribed by a physician; it seemed as though I never did my housework so easily and so quickly as at that time. I was hurrying all the time so that I could sit down to read more of this truth. The practitioner came every day and read with us and showed us how to study the Lessons in the Christian Science Quarterly. I had been doing this for just ten days when the thought came to me that I was healed, that I was perfectly well,—something I had not been for years, and really stronger than I had ever been in my life. I then wondered, in my ignorance of Science, if the practitioner had been treating me too; so I asked her when she came again, and she replied, "Oh, no! we never treat any one unless we are asked to do so." I then asked what had healed me. She said it was the understanding of the power of God to heal that we get in reading Science and Health. I will say here that I was healed of supposed inherited bowel trouble, of life-long standing, and of stomach trouble, which I had for twenty-eight years periodically, and for which I had had fifteen or more doctors; I had never been given anything except morphine or some other opiate. They each said there was no cure for the trouble at all. I was also healed of severe nervous trouble from which I had suffered for two summers, and of female trouble pronounced very serious by three doctors.
For all of this relief I am more thankful than I can tell, but the physical healing seems small and insignificant compared with the spiritual blessings which have attended the understanding of the relation of man to God. I never tire of telling what Christian Science has done for me. I am very grateful to Mrs. Eddy for Science and Health, which helps me to understand the Bible better, and I thank God for every good.
Mrs. Mary E. Johnson, Berthoud, Col.
