I am a veteran of the Civil War
I am a veteran of the Civil War. In 1862 I had a fever which left me afflicted with stomach and liver trouble, and I was troubled for a great many years with it. I came to Colorado in 1866, and continued in the same state of health until the spring of 1901, when I finally took to my bed. I had a doctor, who did all that a faithful physician could do for me. After seven weeks I was on my feet again, but far from well. During that year we moved to Longmont, Col., and all the time I was taking medicine, until May, 1902. I then got down bedfast again, and the doctor said I had taken so much medicine that it had lost its effect, so I decided to try Christian Science. On May 23 I had my first treatment and was healed, but as I was still weak the practitioner came for a few days and read to me and treated me. Just seven days from the first treatment I walked a mile with the G.A.R., then to the cemetery to decorate our old comrades' graves.
I have never had any return of the old complaints. In the September following, First Church of Christ, Scientist, Longmont, Col., was organized, and my wife and I became charter members. We are also members of The Mother Church and are very thankful for the privilege. I feel very grateful to Mrs. Eddy for making God's healing truth plain enough to be understood in this age.
Philip W. Johnson, Berthoud, Col.
