I had been sick for some time when, in the latter part of...
I had been sick for some time when, in the latter part of August, 1906, I was taken seriously ill. My case was a complicated one; I was suffering with lung and stomach trouble, and also had a serious heart affection. My physician said there was not a sound organ in my body. He was doing all that was possible to relieve me, but I grew worse and in about a month a premature birth nearly cost me my life. Fever and other alarming symptoms followed; I became unconscious and was given up to die. Another physician had been called in, but he refused to attend me, owing to his belief that nothing could be done to save me. During my lucid moments I asked my husband for the doctor; he replied that the doctor said there was nothing that he could do for me. We were living at a mining camp, and were a long distance from any Christian Science practitioners, and although I wanted Christian Science help, I thought I was too far away. When I learned, however, that the doctors had given me up, I had a letter written to a practitioner in Denver, who immediately began treating me. I was then lying unconscious and unable to move any part of my body. This was my low condition when the practitioner, so far away, began the absent treatment. I had seen her only once while in Denver previously. In three weeks I was able to sit up, have been gaining steadily in health ever since, and am now in Denver, rejoicing in the great work which Christian Science has wrought in my life.
In gratitude for a previous demonstration, equally wonderful, I feel I must relate that also. While in a mining camp a long distance from the railroad, I had a very serious attack of illness, which continued for eighteen weeks. The physician said that nothing would relieve me but an operation, so I was taken to a hospital in Boulder. The physicians there thought me too weak for the operation, and all I had to look forward to was death to relieve my suffering. One of the nurses advised me to try Christian Science treatment, as she had known of some wonderful cures through it. Like a drowning man grasping at a straw I asked for a practitioner. A lady in Boulder responded, and although it was against the rules of the hospital, I so insisted upon seeing her that they made an exception in my case and allowed her to come in. In three days after she began treating me the trouble had stopped, and at the end of the week I left my sick-bed and went home with my husband. I would be only too happy to write to any one wishing to know further about these wonderful demonstrations in Christian Science, and if any sister woman who reads my story suffers in a like manner, her help is at hand; she has but to seek Truth and pursue it and be well.
Mrs. Effie M. Porter, Denver, Col.
