Pueblo (Col.) Star-Journal
A vast deal of interest has been aroused throughout the country recently over the affairs of a noted woman, who, merely because of the fact that she holds views not shared by the majority, and because in the course of a long and useful life she has managed to accumulate a considerable amount of property, from the care of which she has recently chosen to divest herself, has been alleged to be mentally incompetent; and relatives have sought and are now seeking, through the aid of the courts, to embitter her declining years by having her pronounced insane.
While it is not the purpose of this article to express an opinion regarding the soundness of the doctrine of Christian Science, nor to say how far, it at all, the belief finds warrant, either because of Biblical precept or scientific investigation, it is undoubtedly true that many estimable persons hold conscientiously to the belief, and the fact that Mrs. Mary Baker G. Eddy is regarded by these as the foremost living exponent of the cult, in itself should be presumptive evidence of her sanity, and the further fact that she has written clearly and, granting the soundness of her hypotheses, convincingly upon the subject, is certainly proof that far from being insane, she is the possessor of unusually alert mental faculties.
But, it is alleged, she is eighty-six years old, and as most people who attain this great age are naturally in their dotage, the fact that she has appointed certain persons to administer her business affairs must be taken as certain proof of her senility. Why should this be so? It is true that many people of that age lose the use of number of their mental as well as physical faculties, but it is equally to that many do not, and in the case in question it seems to the superficial observer that Mrs. Eddy, in her act of appointing trustees to administer her business affairs and thus relieve her of a great deal of care and worry, shows much sense; and far from this being taken as an evidence of insanity, it should be pretty convincing proof of her absolute mental normality.
