NAME AND WORK HONORED

Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy, Concord, N. H.

Dear Mrs. Eddy:—In past years the impulse to write to you has been restrained, first because I have felt that if Christian Scientists, we who are not officially associated with you in forwarding this movement, did not give you the unmolested freedom you desire, we could not expect that others would understand or respect the motive of your sacred seclusion; and next, because of your request in The Christian Science Journal of October, 1896, that your students' students would, as a rule, forward their letters direct to the editors thereof in place of sending them to you. I have long realized that your time is too precious for the welfare of our Cause, and through it of all mankind, to be intruded upon lightly or needlessly; and especially when you have so clearly pointed out the way wherein and whereby one may work out his salvation, have warned us of our dangers, answered our questions, and abundantly provided for the student's needs in our beloved text-book, Science and Health, and in your other published works. You have made their duty to God and to each other so plain to Christian Scientists that only wilful wickedness or self-absorbed apathy need err therein.
