"To the Board of Directors of the Huntington Beach Union High School.

"Gentlemen:—We, the undersigned, residents, heads of families, and parents of children attending the Huntington Beach Union High School, do hereby respectfully request your honorable board to retain Prof. S. M. Abbott in his present position as principal of that school. We ask this for the reason that we are informed that his contemplated release from his position is solely on account of his religious belief. We do not believe that this reason should ever be allowed to control or influence the selection of teachers in this school, for the reason that religious teaching is not a part of the curriculum of the schools.

"We have satisfied ourselves that Mr. Abbott is a general favorite with the students, and we have no reason to be dissatisfied with the progress they have made under his instruction. Hoping that we have been misinformed as to your reason for action, which action would certainly be an inexcusable outrage to this age of civilization and intelligence, and that you will see your way clear to retain Mr. Abbott in his present position, we have the honor to remain, "Yours, etc."
