Santa Ana Register

The Santa Ana Register of Saturday had the following to say regarding the local school situation:—

"Things are warmed up at Huntington Beach, and they are getting warmer. All the indications are that the heat will be felt quite keenly by the Union High School Board. Three petitions are out and have been largely signed, and efforts will be made to keep Prof. S. M. Abbott as principal of the high school. Principal Abbott was not reelected principal for the reason that the members of the school board, a majority at least, thought his religious belief made him morally unfit for the position. The largest share of the Huntington Beach school patrons think a big principle is at stake and a fight is on, and in that fight are engaged many who profess no particular religious belief and many who do not know Abbott by sight.

"Three petitions have been signed asking the school board to retain Professor Abbott. These petitions state that the only reason for Abbott's dismissal is his religious belief, that religion is not taught in the schools, that a man's religion should not be considered if he performs his duty and does not force his views upon his students, and one declares than an act of dismissal with no other reason for it than the one given would be 'an outrage to the intelligence of this age of civilization and learning.' One petition was passed among the students of the high school, and every student with one exception signed it, asking for the reinstatement of Professor Abbott.
