Huntington Beach (Cal.) News
[The following items, which we copy from the Huntington Beach (Cal.) News, relate to a case of religious persecution and intolerance which one would hardly expect to encounter in the twentieth century and in a free country.—Editor Sentinel.]
Because the trustees of the Huntington Beach Union High School district believe that Christian Science is demoralizing to the community, Prof. S. M. Abbott has been summarily dismissed from his position as principal of the local high school (Huntington Beach), and will in all probability be compelled during the next year to earn a living for himself and family at some other occupation.
The news of this radical action on the part of the board came as a thunderbolt from a clear sky, and the entire community has been dazed almost beyond expression. So far as the public was aware, school conditions were very satisfactory, and especially so as regarded the principalship. It was known to a great many that Professor Abbott clung to Christian Science as a religion, but as he had been employed upon his merits as a school teacher, no importance was attached to his church affairs, if for no other reason than that the question of religion was never brought up in the schools.
