FROM OUR EXCHANGES

[The British Congregationalist.]

There is every indication that a period of acute theological controversy lies before the churches of this country. The emergence of the New Theology has only precipitated what has long been in preparation, and to those who have kept their eyes open there is nothing surprising in the present condition of things. Nor is there any great cause for alarm. ... It is the condition of a living faith that there should be constant change in the forms in which it finds expression. The processes by which this comes about are often both intricate and painful, but their result is a salutary one, and it is the part of those who profess to believe to wait patiently and fearlessly till the result is achieved. ... There are signs at the present time that all this unrest will only issue in a steadier and more reasonable faith. If it has no other result than to make men think, look round, and ask themselves where they are and whither they are tending, it will at least justify itself.
