The News

[The News stands pat on the question of giving every body a square deal. We subscribe to no particular religious belief, being strictly in the newspaper business. Space is given Professor Abbott's communication for the reason that the editor has a personal knowledge of many instances wherein he has been attacked through his religious belief by people who can discover nothing to say against him personally.—Editor.]

Editor News:—The article published in the last issue of your paper, stating briefly the facts relative to the action of the school board in virtually deposing me from my position as principal of the Union High School for the coming year, has aroused such wide-spread interest and provoked so much discussion that I am constrained to write this article, not in the spirit of vindictiveness, but to present the matter in its true light and to correct the erroneous reports and impressions which have and may be made.

I have been charged with being a Christian Scientist. I plead guilty to the charge and am willing to receive my sentence at the bar of intelligent, unbiased public opinion. It is further charged that, because I am a Christian Scientist, my moral influence is not right in the school and community; but that on the contrary the tenets of my faith would, if generally lived and practised, undermine the very foundation of the moral structure. The first part of the statement, being personal in character, I will not discuss. I am content to leave the determination of that matter to the community, who know what my life has been. The second allegation, that the belief of Christian Science is subversive of morality, calls for an answer. Space will not permit of an exhaustive discussion of the subject. I will simply refute two or three erroneous statements which have been made.
