More than forty years ago Mrs. Eddy proclaimed a religious doctrine, based wholly on the teachings and practices of Jesus, which has ameliorated the sufferings of unnumbered thousands of people and made a marked change in the doctrinal beliefs of every religious denomination. While many may not be willing to admit the fact, it is nevertheless true that in every church materialism is on the wane and religionists are becoming more spiritual, which is largely due to her teachings. During all this time she has defended her understanding of the truth against terrible opposition. Not only has she astonished the religious world by her positive knowledge of spiritual things, but she has also set the scientific world to thinking. Her statements were so unlike the current theories that bigoted and unthinking people ridiculed them and flippantly passed them from tongue to tongue as something to make merry over. But men of great minds found in them food for profound thought.

When Mrs. Eddy stated that matter was nothing beyond an image in mortal mind and devoid of sensation or intelligence, the thoughtless laughed, but she saw something they did not see, she knew something they did not know. Since she unreservedly declared the allness of Mind and the nothingness of matter, many of the physical scientists have abandoned the atomic theory. Mrs. Eddy said forty years ago that "all is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation" (Science and Health, p. 468). Professor Fiske, in his writings, declares that there is no matter apart from consciousness; and numerous other philosophers who were once materialists coincide with his views.
