It is seven years since I turned from materia medica...

It is seven years since I turned from materia medica in hope of finding something which would give me health and happiness. From childhood I had suffered terribly with pains in my back and head, which became worse as I grew older, and when about twenty-five this with other diseases had become almost unbearable. Doctors, both allopathic and homeopathic, did all they could for me, but I only grew worse. After going through a very painful operation, which left me a nervous wreck, I turned from medicine to what I thought was Christian Science. Sad to say it was not Christian Science, but so-called mental healing. I was treated for three years, on and off, by different practitioners, asking always for Christian Science, but never finding it. In March, 1903, I came to Boston to live, and for the first time in my life attended The Mother Church. I shall never forget the first Sunday, although while there and for many days afterwards I suffered with a terrible headache. I knew that there was something I had not found which made those who attended that service so kind, well, and happy. I decided to find out what it was, and I asked questions of different ones who attended that and smaller Christian Science churches.

After many inquiries a dear, faithful practitioner and friend asked me to show her my books, which I did with great eagerness. To my utter astonishment she said, "These are not Christian Science books." She then promised to lend me a copy of Science and Health until I could get one of my own, which would be several days. I began to read it eagerly, for I was hungering and thirsting "after righteousness." Before I had finished the chapter on "Prayer" I was fully convinced that the writer of that book must be living very close to God, and I was anxious to read not only Science and Health, but all of her writings. I have attended the Christian Science church every Sunday since, when I have been where there was one, and when elsewhere I have had my little service either alone or with any Christian Scientist who might be where I was.

It has been my lot to visit several places in foreign countries where the teachings of Christian Science have been misunderstood, and while I do not feel that I have grown sufficiently in the understanding to tell them as much as I should like, I do try to help them by sending them our literature. I have had some beautiful demonstrations of healing, both of sickness and sin in myself and others, and I do know "in whom I have believed." Since striving to follow the teaching of Christian Science, I am fully convinced that it is the religion of Jesus Christ, and that it is the right way to serve God and man. I am waiting patiently, and earnestly studying the Bible and Science and Health for more light, which will come according to my fitness to receive it.
