In the old thought we commenced the year by taking...

In the old thought we commenced the year by taking account of stock, as it were, seeing what could be placed to our credit and thinking of the failures we had made. Now, on the first day of nineteen hundred and seven, I am looking to see what my advancement has been in this Science I am studying, and one thought comes to me very forcibly, viz.; that I have failed to do my duty in acknowledging the help received in Christian Science. Each month and each week I look eagerly for our literature, feeling that I need every article written,—but we must be willing to give if we would receive. For thirty years I was to mortal sense an invalid, a great sufferer. I received an injury which caused complications, so that no part of the body was free from pain. From allopathy I went to homeopathy; then to hydropathy; a year in a sanitarium, etc.,—changing, hoping for relief; at each change a little better, but soon returning to the old conditions.

About eighteen years ago, when this Science was little understood and there was a strong feeling against it, I was at a summer resort, and a lady who had been wonderfully healed and who was consequently very enthusiastic, seeing how pale and sickly I looked, asked me if I knew anything about Christian Science. I replied that a friend had written me that she had attended some lectures, and that Scientists said there was no sin, no sickness, no death, and I thought it was the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard of. In a few days she asked me if I would like to have her treat me. I was willing to try anything, so consented. She then gave me a copy of Science and Health and asked me to read it. The midnight lamp was often burning, and I found the teaching to be both logical and self-evident; but how could I ever abandon the opinions that had been held for centuries! I was, however, ready to admit that Science must have an absolute Principle, no matter whether it agreed with my beliefs or not. For a year the struggle was great; but I could not go back to the old beliefs, and finally the light of spiritual understanding dawned on my consciousness, and I have never been inclined to return to materia medica, although many problems have presented themselves.

It is great cause for rejoicing to know that our help is always with us, and (as I think all who are interested in this Science will say) the physical healing is nothing compared to the spiritual uplifting. The Bible was seldom ready by me in the past, because it seemed so contradictory; but now, having the "Key," it is a daily study. The English language is inadequate to furnish words that can express adequately my love and gratitude for our dear Leader. I send thanks to all who help on the good Cause.—M. L. Morgan, San Francisco, Cal.
