Macon (Ga.) News

If Christian Scientists believed what Mark Twain and others claim to believe they do, it would not be necessary for their critics to misrepresent or even oppose these beliefs. Such beliefs would never have been entertained by reasonable men and women; and even if they were believed for a time, their own absurdity would be all that would be necessary to destroy them. As Gamaliel saw and advised, and as all the best and wisest men of all ages have seen, it is best not to judge, condemn, or persecute others for holding religious opinions and convictions differing from our own. Our work is to bless and help each other, and not to criticise, judge, and condemn. To quote Gamaliel's own wise words with reference to the contemplated as well as the actual persecutions of the early Christians, is it not well to "refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought; but if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it: lest haply ye be found even to fight against God." The very fact that Mrs. Eddy and all other Christian Scientists, to the degree that they are true to her teachings and example, strive to meet all evil with good as well as all good with good, should entitle them to the Christian love and good will of all men, especially of all those who claim to be the followers of him whose religion was and from necessity is and always will be a religion of universal love, kindness, charity, and true helpfulness. ... In the light of Christian Science, as well as in the light of Christ's own teachings, we are all Christians to the degree and only to the degree that we have the Mind and do the works of Christ; and judged by this standard none of us is a good enough Christian to entitle him to sit in judgment upon others. The very fact that whenever Mrs. Eddy is reviled she reviles not again, that whenever she is persecuted she strives to be kind and just to her persecutors, should entitle her to the name Christian, as well as to Christian treatment; and the fact that she sees and teaches and is actually proving that the Christianity of Christ is universal, eternal, practical, and demonstrable, that it heals the sick, reforms the sinner, and brings to light all good and perfect blessings, is sufficient justification for calling this Christianity Christian Science.
