May 7, 1901, I was given ether and had several teeth...
May 7, 1901, I was given ether and had several teeth extracted. The following day I became very ill and took to my bed. A physician was summoned, who treated me for a week or two and then said he could do no more. Another physician was called, who diagnosed my case as severe nervous trouble. I was under his care for five or six months and he sometimes made three visits a day, but finally he, too, said he could do no more for me. I lay in bed nearly all the time, occasionally sitting up for a little while, and for three months I was not allowed to see callers. Sometimes it seemed as if my reason had left me. I could take but very little nourishment, and finally could not retain even infants' prepared food.
About six months after I became ill, a Scientist called to see me. I asked her if she thought I could ever be any better, for I had then given up all hope of ever being well. She said that I could be healed if I would do what Christian Science requires. I agreed to do this, and all medicines were thrown out and the treatment begun. The Scientist told me to get up, go out to the table, and eat whatever I wanted. I told her that I would do so, but that I knew it would kill me. I did eat, increasing the amount of food gradually, and began to gain. The awful cloud lifted, and I grew stronger. In five weeks I was doing my own work without any help. A short time before I began treatment my father came to see me. Before he went away he came to my room, and wept as he kissed me good-by. I knew then that he thought I was going to die. Two or three weeks after Christian Science treatment began, he came to see me again and found me cooking. He was greatly surprised, and wondered if it really could be I. This sickness cost my husband a good deal of money, and the amount spent for Christian Science was comparatively small. I am in excellent health to-day, and even go out nursing.
