About ten years ago the first great sorrow of my life...
About ten years ago the first great sorrow of my life came to me with the passing away of my eldest little daughter. Christian Science had been presented to me before her illness, but I did not rely wholly upon it. employing medical help. I did, however, place the baby under Science treatment, to prevent if possible any appearance of the same trouble in her, and the result was all that could be desired. The only hope, the only light I could see, came through Christian Science, and for hours I studied our Leader's words, especially in "Miscellaneous Writings." I visited the Reading Room, and gained strength and courage to take up the daily duties. to be cheerful, and help others whenever I could. Since then I have tried to be a Christian Scientist. There have been some dark hours, some stumbling, and there have also been victories and rejoicings. As I look back over the years I can only be thankful for the knowledge of the truth, which has so often helped me, and I think, Where would I be, what would I be, without Christian Science? I feel that gratitude is more than words, and everything I do that helps any one, any word I speak that gives cheer, is but an expression of gratitude to the giver of all good gifts for His gifts to me, and gratitude to our Leader for her untiring efforts in behalf of humanity.—Elizabeth L. S. Madden, Troy, N. Y.
