There are many present indications of a popular revulsion...
Torrington (Conn.) Register
There are many present indications of a popular revulsion against the attacks made by sensational newspapers and magazines upon the Christian Science Church. This is a favorable fact. It is but fair that the Christian Science Church should be accorded the same respect which is given to all other religious denominations in this country. The religious atmosphere of America is not yet filled. There is always room for another sect. ... It is a surprising fact that the Christian Scientists have borne the bitterest kind of criticism without showing signs of losing their dignity. Whenever a reply has been issued to an attack, that reply has been made in carefully considered terms of argument. Denunciation of its assailants has not been a feature of the Christian Science Church's method. ... Attacks upon a religious sect have been met usually with such a display of rancorous spirit by the assaulted sect that the dignity of self-control has been lost; but the Christian Scientists have fought for their religion with a calmness that is commendable. ...
It is only in accord with the spirit of our Constitution that we should treat the Christian Scientists with the same toleration which we accord to all other sects with whose teachings we may not agree even in the slightest extent or to which we may be theoretically opposed. If there are millions of people in this country—and there are that many—who find great pleasure in accepting the theories of Mrs. Eddy, we ought to let them follow their way in peace. If we were to fight every religious sect with which we are not in sympathy this country would soon become a most unhealthful place of residence. It is only by the policy of absolute toleration that the atmosphere of America can be kept clear of baneful religious controversies. There is nothing more dangerous to national peace than a disposition to stir up religious rancor, and there is just such a disposition evident in this Christian Science agitation.
