LOVE

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.—Jesus.

As we study the life and teachings of Christ Jesus, thought is awakened to the need of more love. His ministry on earth was full of compassion, tenderness, and pity for sin-laden humanity. St. John, the beloved disciple, caught a sense of the wondrous power of love that flowed through the Master's teachings, and he never ceased his endeavor to awaken others to this consciousness. In his first Epistle we read, "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love." Thus Love's power is the key-note of all spiritual progress, and he who would follow in the footsteps of the lowly Nazarene must let Love dominate all his life-work. It is only by striving to do this that we can learn to know God aright. We must throw open the door of our consciousness, that the Christ-love may flow in. It may be there are many weeds in our heart's garden, that only its radiant light can reveal; and we would have only immortal flowers growing there.

As the light of divine Love dawns upon us, we earnestly desire that more of the Christ-spirit may be manifested through us day by day, enabling us to follow more closely in the footsteps of him whose whole work on earth was doing good. Our Leader says, "Desire is prayer" (Science and Health, p. 7), and in trusting God with our desires we know, as a new understanding dawns upon our consciousness, that the false desires of the human heart give place to that which is true. Gratitude for this uplifting can only be expressed in self-abnegation and by a constant endeavor to reflect the Christ-love at all times,—alike in church and home, in business and in pleasure.
