[Written for the Sentinel.]

"THE CARNAL MIND"

Farewell forever, evil counselor,
Henceforth be separate thy ways and mine.
My heart—thy foolish yoke-fellow of yore,
To sow the sands and drink the poison wine
Of earth's disquietude—hath prayed at wisdom's shrine.

And how doth wisdom cry, and lift her voice
Amid the warring tones of wordly things?
She bids the sons of earth awake, rejoice,
And cast away thy cords and binding-strings,
Their sickness and their sighs and vain imaginings.

Farewell forever! May the memories
Of thee and thine, and my benighted past,
Be all forgotten as the dream that dies
When morning lamps upon the clouds are cast.
Dark enemy, farewell; be this farewell the last.
