Christian Science was first brought to my notice in...
Christian Science was first brought to my notice in July, 1903, when a dear Scientist, who had just moved into the neighborhood, gave my wife some of its literature to read, telling her that she could be healed by the study and practice of this new-found Science. After reading a copy of the Christian Science Journal my wife became so much interested that she insisted I should read it also especially the "Los Angeles Case." At first I demurred, saying it could do me no good, and that I had no time to read it, but if she thought there was any benefit to be derived from it to try it by all means, and if it did no good, it surely could do no harm; but upon her urgent request I agreed to read that one article, and—thanks be to God—by the time I had finished reading that case my eyes were opened.
I had been a sufferer for many years from stomach trouble, besides catarrhal trouble, liver and kidney complaints, etc., from which I suffered untold misery. One physician claimed that there were symptoms of an organic kidney disease, and with the hope of being cured of all these ailments I had tried many medicines and not a few doctors, but only with the result that I was worse off than ever when Christian Science found me. I was without hope in the world, and worse yet. I was without God, although I had been praying for light for more than four years, but I know now that my prayers were answered, for when the truth was revealed to me in Christian Science I knew I had found God, a God who is an ever-present help in time of trouble, and I know at this present writing that He is a God "who healeth all thy diseases," for I can truthfully say that I am a well man to-day. All this has been accomplished through the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. and the Bible, which has become an open book to me now. These books have been my daily companions for four years, and no medicines have been used in our family since that day in July, 1903. Our only child, a little girl four years old, has never tasted medicine, and she is a healthy child. I have also been enabled through the understanding of this blessed truth to help others, and for all these blessings words are inadequate to express my gratitude.
I must not forget to mention the disappearance of the last physical error which presented itself, and the overcoming of which seemed very wonderful to us. Fifteen years ago an abnormal growth formed in my back and became quite large. A specialist pronounced it of a serious nature, and while it had been very painful it had caused us much worry. Six months ago this growth disappeared without causing me any inconvenience whatever, and now its place is not known
