Los Angeles (Cal.) Herald
Christian Science is in no way allied to hypnotism, mesmerism, or auto-suggestion. As a matter of fact, it is opposed to these systems, both in Principle and practice. If the hypnotist were to gain an understanding of Christian Science it would destroy his ability to practise hypnotism or mesmerism. Hypnotism seeks to accomplish results through the agency of the human mind, and is simply a process of displacing one condition by suggesting another —a mere traffic in human thought. Christian Science excludes the human mind as a factor of its healing, and relies wholly upon the operation of divine Mind. Hypnotic suggestion may seem to benefit the patient temporarily, "but the last state of that man is worse than the first." On the other hand Christian Science cannot heal an individual of a physical trouble without improving him mentally, morally, and spiritually, thus making the improvement permanent.
