[Written for the Sentinel.]

Majesty

"Peace, be still."

The winds and waves in sobbing silence died,
And in the hearts of men calm did abide.
Yea, all the many voiced powers of hell
Beneath that charm of awful silence fell,
So still, so infinitely sweet he came
That all the world caught stillness as a flame
Of holy fire, sweeping away desire
Of all but that eternal light and grace,
Which radiant shone from out the Master's face —
A face in which all gentleness, all power
Together dwelt, and in that fateful hour
Of utter darkness, flashed and glowed —a star—
On which men gazed and thenceforth silent were.
