All sects and creeds can show by the Bible a foundation...

All sects and creeds can show by the Bible a foundation for what they believe, and I here give one passage that seems to me to favor Christian Science: "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up, and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him." According to the critic, Christian Science is a "monumental humbug, and if so this teaching must be the same.

I am not defending Christian Science, as I do not believe in it. In case of sickness I believe it shows better sense, instead of sending for the elders of the church, to send for the doctor, but I am in favor of allowing every person to believe as he likes without being abused for so doing.

Once upon a day a savage thought he would like to cross over to an island, so he got himself a log and by burning and scraping he made a dugout and also made himself as happy as a clam. According to the critic's way of thinking that dugout ought to have been the end of shipbuilding, — no change. It is the kind of men that did not believe in going right along plowing with a crooked stick that we are to thank for all the progress we enjoy: and if people never did change we would still be in a savage state.
