When I first heard of Christian Science and had seen...
When I first heard of Christian Science and had seen some of the effects of knowing the truth in people around me, I was troubled with a desire for intoxicants, and finally decided to go to a practitioner in order to be relieved of it. I did not care particularly to go on with the study of the Science, but wished more than anything else to be cured of this dreadful appetite. With this thought uppermost in my consciousness, I had not clearly seen the nothingness of it all, nor realized that there was no pleasure in it. The demonstration was not made at once, so I grew somewhat impatient and felt that I would like to give up the Science altogether, but somehow I could not; it seemed to follow me, until at last I realized that there was nothing but suffering in going on as I was; and then grew the desire for the truth itself, as well as for the healing. When I was willing to give up at last, not only the desire for liquor left me, but all taste for tobacco. This is not all, but ailments which had troubled me for years seemed to vanish almost before I recognized that they had left.
As I am a dentist, my work calls for especially good sight. I am often called upon to put in gold fillings, and sometimes, before coming into Science, it seemed impossible for me to do this on account of poor sight. I had thought several times that I would have to wear glasses, but this trouble left me, with many others for which I had not asked treatment. I smoked for eight months after taking up Science, but I really think I wanted to discontinue this habit long before it seemed to leave me, and finally one morning I told my wife that I was going to leave off smoking. I had no desire for it all that day, and have had none since. This was over two years ago. I find that my practice has grown considerably, and I am able to accomplish more alone, since taking up the Science, than I was before with an assistant, and with less fatigue.
It is not for the many demonstrations over physical ills for which I am most thankful, but for the understanding I have gained of the Bible through the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which understanding has lifted many a cloud and dispelled many a doubt and fear. I am most grateful for the many blessings which have come to me through the understanding I have of Christian Science.—G. H. Richardson, Chicago, Ill.
