Letters to our Leader
[The following letter from the West is so expressive of the true Christian spirit which should animate our work in connection with the building of the extension to The Mother Church, that we are prompted to a fervent "God bless you!" —Editor.]
Watertown, S. D. June 12, 1905. Rev. Mary Baker G. Eddy, Concord, N. H.
Beloved Leader:— A year ago last December the members of this church decided to start a fund for the erection of a new church edifice in this city. From time to time contributions have been given by individual members as well as the church collectively towards this fund, until the sum of five hundred and forty-eight dollars has been contributed. However, during this period the necessity for greater unity of thought and action in regard to The Mother Church Building Fund began to force itself more and more upon the members of this church, until the matter of making a further effort was brought up for full consideration at the last quarterly business meeting. Although a sum amounting to over six hundred dollars has been contributed at various times by this church, exclusive of individual offerings sent direct to Mr. Chase, also the sum of one hundred and fifteen dollars given by the Sunday School towards The Mother Church Building Fund, yet so long as the necessity for further contributions from the Field exists, we as a church consider it a privilege to be able to send our love-offering from time to time until sufficient funds have been given. Therefore, at the said business meeting it was the unanimous wish of the members of this church, expressed by silent ballot, to donate our church building fund to The Mother Church Building Fund. Furthermore, for some time past it has been our custom to set aside the contribution on the last Sunday of each month for The Mother Church Building Fund, and the contribution on the first Sunday of each month for our home church building fund; but it was also unanimously voted at the said meeting to send both these contributions to The Mother Church Building Fund so long as the need exists.
