It was in April, 1888, that the light of Truth first dawned upon my darkened senses with a sweet promise of hope. I saw the words Christian Science on the page of a daily paper. The writer of the article first attempted to tell what this teaching was, and what great benefits it held out to mankind. He then proceeded to give his own version, and questioned the possibility of anything coming out of Boston except fads. The article gave the name of the text-book, Science and Health, also the name and address of the author. This enabled me to write directly to the author for something which would rightly explain the teachings, and tell how a sick man might receive blessing therefrom. In due time I received some pamphlets and a copy of The Christian Science Journal, and after reading them I wrote again, and this time subscribed for the Journal for one year, and purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy.
Upon receipt of this book I began to study it, but for about six months I felt disposed to conceal the fact that I had become a student of Christian Science.
At the time my eyes were opened to the truth, I had what one doctor called chronic indigestion; another consumption, and still another, flabby heart. I was then practising law. After reading the book for about a week, there came an opportunity to test its promises to heal or alleviate pain. From my earliest recollections I had suffered from sick, headaches, and this was the first ailment to be met. On the day that such an effort was made, I closed the office and devoted myself to Science and Health. I read for three hours, and as there was not any apparent stoppage of pain, I became nonplused, and the thought came to get drugs, as was usual under such conditions. While hesitating to take this step, I laid the book down on a table, and bowed my head thereon, seeking to find the way to realize harmony. While in that attitude the thought came to deny self. Self was to the seeming very large, and had a sense of racking pain, yet something must be done, and the effort was made. I then awaited results, and when I awakened from an hour's sleep the headache was gone, I felt refreshed, there was a sweet peace, and I knew that the Christ had touched the human consciousness, thereby healing me.
