I came to Christian Science because it appealed to me...
I came to Christian Science because it appealed to me as being what we had been seeking for so long a time, yet could not find.
It was as far back as 1887 that I was told by our family physician that it was extremely necessary for an operation to be performed upon my wife, who was becoming more and more frail day by day. It was very evident that something would have to be done. At this time, we knew nothing about Christian Science, and had not even heard it mentioned. Four doctors were called in, two of them being skilful surgeons, and the operation was performed successfully, but still my wife's health did not seem to improve, and powerful medicines were taken continually. It seemed to me that always after taking a dose she seemed to feel less like herself than before she had taken it. One day she said to me, "I feel so badly all the time that I would not care to live, if it were not for you and our little daughter; I will not take any more medicine, for it does me no good, but always seems to make me feel worse." I had not told her that the doctor had said that she might live a year, but not longer.
Just as she expressed this resolve, we heard, through a relative, about Christian Science; and thinking that perhaps this would benefit her, she sought information in regard to it, and was so much interested as to become the possessor of a copy of Science and Health. She began to read it, and in a very short time commenced to improve in health and strength, and one day actually found herself running after a car.
