Back to Christ

In these days of much theorizing and much preaching we hear a good deal about a growing tendency toward agnosticism and infidelity, and although many reasons have been advanced for this phenomenon of modern civilization, none seem to afford a sufficient basis upon which to suggest a remedy. If such a tendency does in fact exist, it would seem that there is need of a more active and efficient preaching of the gospel upon practical lines which meet the present needs of humanity, rather than of the cultivation of a far-away idealism which seems to the average man impracticable.

Those who have been most exercised about this tendency toward agnosticism have made much use of the phrase "Back to Christ" as a watchword indicative of the necessity of a more insistent preaching of the simple yet comprehensive teachings of Jesus, if mankind is to be saved from the threatened peril of unbelief.

In this premise they are undoubtedly correct, and it therefore becomes necessary for those who are undertaking to stem this tide of infidelity to ascertain precisely what these teachings were, and carefully to inquire regarding our Master's works as well as his words, so that his teachings may have the proper atmosphere and perspective.
