Sixteen years ago my spine was injured by a fall, and I was obliged to give up everything for a while.

For nine years I was able to do but little work, and that which I did was always attended by suffering. The three years following I was a confirmed invalid. Growing worse, a consultation of doctors was held and the case pronounced tuberculosis of the spine, the upper part having commenced to decay.

One of the last resorts of materia medica was now employed, and the spine was cauterized ten times. Next I was put into a stiffened jacket, and in this condition was sent West to see if the change would not prove beneficial. I grew no better and in three months was obliged to call a physician. This made the tenth doctor who had been employed, including some of the best specialists in New England.
