Our Whole Heritage

"Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ" (Ephesians, 4 : 13).

One foe to progress in the growth of some Christian Scientists is the remains of a false humility, that fears, or is unwilling, to claim its whole heritage, and so virtually denies the possibility of obeying our Lord's command, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."

Self-abasement was looked on as a merit while we believed that sin was a part of our original nature; but selfabasement never helped us to rise out of sin, but was rather an excuse for laziness, and for compromise with sin. If this was the case before, how much less can self-abasement find a place in Christian Science, in which we find man to be God's own image and likeness! How dare we say that we cannot hope to do as well as so-and-so, because he has more intelligence, more love, more strength of character ? Does not all good come from the same inexhaustible Source equally open to us all ? Is God partial ? We know that He "is no respecter of persons," and that "to all mankind, and in every hour. Deity supplies all good" (Science and Health, p. 494). It is we who limit ourselves by our false beliefs, fears, and false humility.
