A considerable number of American women have of late been led into observational and mathematical pursuits in connection with astronomy. One of them, Dorothea Klumpke, has been lent to France for more than a dozen years. Miss Klumpke has been connected with the observatory of Paris in one capacity or another since 1887. She is now at the head of a bureau for measuring star plates for the new international chart of the heavens, and has five assistants.

George E. Roberts, director of the mint, has issued his final estimate which shows that during the year 1901 the United States produced 3,805,500 ounces of gold, valued at $78,666,700, a decrease of $504,300, or .636 per cent as compared with the yield of 1900.

One of the latest roadway enterprises is that of a New York-Chicago boulevard of the most substantial construction. It is claimed that the active interests of a very large number of people living on the projected line of the road, has been secured.
