In July, 1898, I met with a very painful accident
In July, 1898, I met with a very painful accident. It was said that I would be crippled for life, as the muscles had been torn from the knee. I recovered sufficiently to be able to push myself about the house in a chair, and nearly five months later Christian Science found me in that crippled condition, mentally rebellious and doubting.
A friend said to me, "I know two Christian Science women in town, and they say you can be cured. They will come to see you if you wish them to." The word Christian and the promise to cure me appealed to me, and I told her I would like to see them. I had proved the fruitlessness of material remedies.
The healer came first on Friday evening, and that night I had a very strange dream. I was walking a very pleasant road with friends who were dear, the sunshine all about me; then the road began to wind in and out among the trees, and they cast shadows around me. I crossed several streams, and at last was climbing a rough, dark mountain sede — alone. Then I was brought to a sudden stop. In front of me. closing down on me, was the earth; back of me was darkness, and no discernible way, ahead, — not room enough to go on. I could see the light through a little opening in the ground, and just outside, a woman. I said to her, "Help me cut." She replied, "I can't; but will give you a shovel and you can dig out." Then I heard the earth and rocks falling, just as I awoke.
