How I was Converted to Christian Science

It has been over eight years since my wife and I took up the study of Christian Science, and during this time we have had many proofs that Christian Science is the panacea for all human ills.

I had been suffering from insomnia caused by financial losses and sickness in our family, and after all else had failed to give me sleep and peace of mind, in my sore distress I turned to Christian Science for help and found relief. The understanding that Life knows no earthly woes came to me by slow degrees, and it was years before my fears of insomnia were overcome. My wife had been hungering for this Truth, and when a friend told her of Christian Science and loaned her Science and Health to read she was very happy. In a short time she was able to demonstrate the Truth that heals the sick and casts out error, and was soon freed from periodical sick headaches that she had had since childhood.

Christian Science found me an infidel. I hated the Bible more than anything else, for I believed it was the greatest mischief-maker in the world. This error, too, was met and overcome by Truth and Love, and the dark clouds of infidelity and the fears of insomnia were dispelled together.

Love for the Bible came through the understanding of the writings of our beloved Leader, and I can now see that it would be impossible for an infidel to continue reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy, and remain a sceptic of the Bible, for it was that good old Book from which she received the inspiration that gave Christian Science to the world.

In my own case I can see the truth of the statement "man's extremity is God's opportunity," for I was compelled to accept what was best for me.

In those dark days my wife saw that my fears and delusions were needless and groundless, and she lovingly declared the Truth for me every night for weeks, and I would respond to the treatment by dropping off to sleep. She never once failed to quiet my fears in this way.

At first I thought it was a hypnotic power that she had acquired by reading Science and Health, and I was eager to find out what the power was, so I tried to read the book for myself but my prejudices against anything founded upon the Scriptures prevented me. I would pick up the book and read a few words and then throw it down in almost despair. Finally I did not try to read it at all.

It was then that my wife showed great wisdom and patience. She read portions of it to me, or such passages as I would listen to. These she read over and over until finally the beautiful light broke through the darkness of mortal mind, and I found the Truth that made me free. To-day the Bible and Science and Health are my companions constantly.

I have no doubt now that Jesus was immaculate, that he is our divine leader and guide, and we should strive to mould our lives after this pattern, even to healing the sick and casting out devils (evils), and I shall never cease thanking Mrs. Eddy for the blessed comforter that she has given to the world through her writings.
