Working in Harmony

While the prosperity of Christian Science to-day depends mainly on individual demonstration, nevertheless, there are yet demonstrations to be made collectively in church work whereby the cause may be advanced more rapidly. The object to be attained is to have all act in concert; all move with one accord in the highest possible concept of Truth, towards the desired end.

To do this, we sign certain tenets, the constitution, and by-laws, thereby agreeing to abide by them until they are changed, as future decisions may direct. By signing them we give our consent to be so governed in church matters, all just government being obtained by the consent of the governed. We therefore to a degree relinquish our rights as individuals for the advantage to be gained by acting as a body; even as a soldier swears to obey his superior officer. If then a question arises and we find ourselves on the side of the minority it would be our moral duty to help the majority to success in their endeavors, even as we would expect them to help us were we on the side of the majority and they with the minority. Such surrendering of our concept of action must be made in order to act as a unit, which is the thing desired.

A plan of action having been adopted in a council of war, all the officers must support it, even though some were against the plan. If they did not they would undoubtedly be courtmartialed. Acting as a unit they will probably win. Acting separately through jealousy, etc., has caused many defeats.
