A Puzzling Question Answered

Before gaining the understanding of the Scriptures which our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," gives, I often wondered at the many contradictory passages the Bible seemed to contain. Among the most puzzling was that David continually besought God to destroy his enemies, while Jesus said, "Love your enemies."

Christian Science has made clear to me that the enemies which David wished destroyed were not corporeal personalities, but false claims of error which he knew God could destroy. Our Leader tells us in "Miscellaneous Writings," p. 8, "Simply count your enemy to be that which defiles, defaces, and dethrones the Christ-image that you should reflect." Jesus commands us to love those who do not manifest love toward us, knowing that by holding them in the thought of Love, we may be able to help them to overcome error and see them manifesting love to us in return. How thankful we should be to God for revealing to us, through our dear Mother, the way to love our enemies, which, in the old thought, seemed impossible, and how gratefully our thoughts turn to her who is daily exemplifying in thought and deed, this great command of our Master, "Love your enemies."
