Out of Darkness into Light

I did not become interested in Christian Science because I was healed physically, but I was attracted to it by hearing of the wonderful cures it was producing. I at once decided that a system of religion that was able to do works of this character must surely be the correct religion. This was about twelve years ago. I read the book, Science and Health, but it was almost a sealed book to me.

The Massachusetts Metaphysical College was open at that time, and I often wished that I might have the pleasure of attending the college, that I might gain more understanding of this system that claimed so much for mortals. The way, however, did not seem quite clear for that, so I kept plodding along by myself for several years, as there was not a Scientist in our beautiful mountain city to whom I could apply for help or answers to my questions. Nine years ago I attended a class and came home greatly refreshed.

Then came the time of persecution. I had been a member of an Orthodox church for several years. I saw more clearly than ever that Christian Science must be the Truth as taught and demonstrated by Jesus. I was enthused more than ever, and did not keep it a secret. It seemed too good to be selfish about, and I longed to share it with others. I told several of the prominent church members about it. The first was the minister's wife, who was an invalid and had about decided to have a surgical operation performed. I told her that she would not be obliged to go to the hospital for treatment, because Christian Science could heal her and do the work better than all other forms of treatment. She seemed somewhat interested, and I left, promising to send her a book that would explain the principle of Christian Science.
