Among the Churches

At a meeting of the members of our society of Students of Christian Science, held in our chapel at eight o'clock Tuesday evening, October 24, 1899, it was unanimously decided to organize a Second Church of Christ, Scientist, of Houston, Texas. A charter was prepared, and forwarded to the Secretary of State, upon the filing of which the Second Church became a corporation under the laws of the State of Texas.

The Society, which has become the Second Church of Christ, Scientist, of Houston, Texas, was organized July 3, 1898. A few weeks after our organization, divine Love met our need by opening the way for our Society to hold services in a church building erected especially for our use. July 26, 1898, one of our members signed a five-year lease for a church building, fifty by twenty-five feet, to be built on Main Street between McKinney and Lamar Avenues, one of the most accessible and desirable locations in the city. September 4, 1898, we met there with our friends for our first service. The building is of frame, with metal roof and Gothic stained-glass windows. It is located just beyond a hedge of evergreens under the spreading branches of a large oak. In this quiet shelter all honest weary hearts may hear and learn of the blessed gospel of Christian Science, this new-old gospel of peace on earth and good-will to all men.

Upon completion of the building and the furnishing thereof, it was dedicated to the cause of Christian Science, and offered as a testimonial of our love to our Leader, the Rev. Mary Baker G. Eddy. Her acceptance of our offering was personally acknowledged.
