Have Miracles Ceased?

Christian Science is a subject concerning which we hear many conflicting statements. However, a visit to one of the weekly testimonial meetings will bring to light the fact that the believers have very substantial evidence to bring forth in support of their views. The service was opened by a song, after which Mr. Robert L. Ziller read a chapter from the Bible followed by a short selection from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of Christian Science, written by Mary Baker G. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of this Science. Before proceeding with the meeting the speaker made the following remarks, "It is sometimes asked by those unfamiliar with the teachings of Christian Science whether we healing is through hypnotism. We are sometimes called a Godless and prayerless people, and it may not be out of place to remark that no statement that could be made about Christian Scientists would be from the truth. We truly believe in God, yea, we know that He is 'All-in-all.' We acknowledge no other way of salvation than that taught by our blessed Saviour, and it is only by meekly and prayerfully following in the pathway he marked out for us that we hope to overcome the ills that beset humanity. No mental suggestion, thought-transference, hypnotism, or spiritualism enter into the ministrations of Christian Science, I have no hesitation in saying that those who will speak to-night will agree with me in the statement that their healing of sickness as well as sin was brought about by fervent and effectual prayer in the deepest, truest, and most scientific sense of the word. The meeting is now in your hands."

A gentleman in the congregation immediately arose and, noting the time, said, "I have but two minutes in which to speak to you to-night, as I have to catch the train, but I cannot half express the gratitude I feel for what Christian Science has done for me. My troubles were numerous and baffled all efforts of my physicians. I was examined by fourteen physicians and finally given one month in which to prepare for death. I was entirely healed through Christian Science. and I now know that God is our refuge, and an ever-present help." Another gentleman arose and said, "I did not embrace Christian Science through being healed of sickness, for when I first heard of it I was not sick. To make my condition understood I shall have to go back about five years in my life, at which time I was a successful contractor. I lived in St. Louis and later in New Orleans, and spent many of my nights in ring, for I was considered a good amateur boxer. It is hardly necessary to say that this led me among associates of the lowest character, where evil and vice of every sort is found. Reverses in business came causing me to have but little income. I entered the ring as a prize-fighter, and was well known in that circle as an athlete of marked ability. My heart was never at rest and I thought that perhaps if I should move to a farm with my family an ideal life might be experienced. I came to Texas and bought a farm, but soon found that this failed to bring the satisfaction I had anticipated. Then Christian Science came into my life, and I knew at once that this was what I had always yearned for. I cannot express my gratitude to God for this blessing. It has filled my life with a joy hitherto unknown. It has made me a different man, for it has helped me in every way, and brought the understanding of what constitutes true life." The speaker's voice choked with emotion as he concluded, and his hearers were deeply moved by his sincere and earnest expression of gratitude to God for Christian Science.
