Thoughts
Did you ever begin your work for the day with a feeling of weariness and discouragement? Have you tried to overcome these feelings with prayer and the reading of the Scriptures all to no purpose? Then have you questioned yourself and wondered why God did not help you? I feel quite sure that many people have had such days as this, but of course it was before they had heard of Christian Science. Now, if we are tempted with such thoughts, we have our remedy in reading our little text-book, Science and Health by Mary Baker G. Eddy, and in all the blessed promises in the Bible, which seem so different from the old thought. All the doubts and fears gradually fade away if we calmly and quietly try to realize for ourselves the beauty of this great Truth.
Have you ever watched the surprise among the grand mountains and hills? At first all seems misty. Masses of white, soft vapor lie in great clouds between the hills and down on the lowlands, but as we watch, the bright rays of the sun penetrate every place where there is mist or shadow, and then if we turn away or close our eyes for a few minutes, when we look on the scene again, all is changed; the glorious sun has risen, we can see the distant hills clearly where before we could only see a very short distance. Now the little birds are singing joyously as though they too were thankful for all this brightness, and we know they are always glad and happy. Often I wish we were as ready to sing hymns of praise as they are. We should be, for we are told that we are of much more value than they. Christian Science clears away all the mists that seem to obstruct our view, but at times we do not rouse ourselves to look at the sunrise. We have not awakened and need to be shaken or have a shower-bath of Truth poured over us every day until we are fully aroused and can see all things in the pure, beautiful light of Christian Science.
A dear teacher of Christian Science once pointed out to me the sweet hymn of Cowper which is in our Christian Science Hymnal, and it has been so very helpful to me that I like to speak of it here.
