Cancerous Tumor Healed
Having received great benefits physically and spiritually from Christian Science, I wish publicly to bear my testimony to the Christ-Truth. For several years I suffered from a cancerous tumor (so three or four medicos pronounced it) growing on the upper surface of the stomach. At this time, I was living at Vernal, near the Uintah Reservation, Utah, about two hundred and twenty-five miles from Salt Lake City. In 1896 or 1897, being in great agony, I submitted to examination by four physicians, who gave the trouble the above name. They told me that owing to its very peculiar location they could not help, beyond giving me morphine or some other narcotic. They hinted that my days were numbered. Naturally I felt somewhat depressed, for I had a family to support and had been unable to do much for two or three years on account of my condition.
In July, 1898, I took my wife and two little girls to visit among her relatives in Salt Lake City. During my short stay in the city I went to hospital, where I was again examined by four of staff surgeons and physicians, who pronounced my case hopeless, though they could give some relief with morphine, etc. They told me to be very careful, that my days were numbered, etc. I returned to Vernal. My wife wrote me, insisting that if I would only come back to the city I could be cured by Christian Science.
I laughed at the idea. Everything else had failed. The tumor was very large and hard. I could scarcely walk a block. I returned to Salt Lake City in October, 1898. My wife took me to a relative who had been healed by Christian Science. With great difficulty I walked from the street car to the house close by. After listening a while to a Christian Science talk, I remarked I did not believe in anything, not even Christian Science; but I consented to take treatment. From that hour improvement began. Day by day, under the solvent of Truth, the cancer diminished. Peaceful and refreshing sleep came to help me along. I went to work at once, doing some teaming. Among the first jobs that came, I had to haul and deliver at the hospital, where I had undergone examination, some very large stone steps. One or two of the physicians saw me handling the stones, and severely rebuked me, saying such work would kill me. I said, "I am getting better. I can do any kind of work. Christian Science has set me on my feet, made me well and strong, given me refreshing sleep and a good appetite."
