Three years ago I learned how important it is to give specific prayerful treatment for any physical ailment. At the beginning of the school year it became apparent that I was hemorrhaging. However, I neglected to devote specific prayer to my health. Occasionally when the physical evidence was particularly alarming I would turn my thought to the concept of man as a child of God. Man is spiritual, never material.
This continued for three months, and the condition persisted. At this point I decided to call a Christian Science practitioner, since I had not healed the situation myself. With her wise help I corrected many false concepts of myself. The belief of punishment for past sins, inharmonious personal and business relationships, and false concepts of woman were all exposed, repudiated, and replaced with spiritual truth.
Although the bleeding continued, much spiritual progress had been made, and I felt sure of a healing. I then continued praying on my own but only in a general way. Finally, one day in February, after reading the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly, I decided to face the situation directly and to give myself a treatment as I had learned to do after taking Christian Science class instruction.
I saw that the disorder stemmed from three main misconceptions: that man is material, that matter has power to malfunction, and that life is based on blood. I then refuted each of these false beliefs. Most helpful were these statements in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (pp. 264-265): "Spirit and its formations are the only realities of being" and "The universe of Spirit is peopled with spiritual beings, and its government is divine Science." The rest of that entire page brought the picture of spiritual existence into sharp focus for me. Also I recalled (ibid., pp. 384-385), "Sickness, sin, and death must at length quail before the divine rights of intelligence, and then the power of Mind over the entire functions and organs of the human system will be acknowledged." In the fifteen or twenty minutes that I worked prayerfully this way with my books and Concordances I felt a deep inspiration that can't be explained with words. At that specific instant the excessive bleeding stopped and has never recurred again.
I'm very grateful for this manifestation of God's illimitable power. Mrs. Eddy understood this power very clearly, and I am very thankful for all the avenues she provided for activity to support the Christian Science movement.
