Although earnestly desiring to understand God I wasn't satisfied with the concept of Him that was taught in the orthodox church we regularly attended while I was growing up, particularly what was taught about heaven and hell. So when friends told me about Christian Science when I was a young woman, I happily accepted its teachings, which answered my questions about God and explained Him as the source of all good.

I eagerly started reading the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and in only a week or two I was healed of a digestive problem that had persisted for a long time, making eating an uncomfortable and painful ordeal. I have had good digestion ever since.

Soon after I became a student, my mother was healed in a very short time of a serious heart condition. An interesting aspect of her healing was the fact that she turned to Christian Science only as a last resort and because she saw that I was comforted by studying it. The healing convinced her of the truth of Christian Science, and she remained a loyal student for the rest of her life—thirty years.
