The author depicts a common image in the ancient world: that of a man gathering up his long, full garment and tucking it into his belt so as to be able to work or move efficiently. The New English Bible translates, "You must therefore be mentally stripped for action, perfectly self-controlled."

His delight is in the law of the Lord (Ps. 1:2)
