I am extremely grateful to have been raised as a Christian Scientist. Through my study of this Science I have gained a better understanding of God and my relationship to Him. I have learned to pray for myself, my family, and the world, and have seen many proofs that this prayer is effective. I'd like to share one of these proofs which was very exciting to me and from which I learned a good lesson.

I'd been suffering with a sore throat, which got worse, to the point that I could only talk or swallow with great pain. I had prayed for myself daily, trying to see clearly the unreality of disease and evil and the omnipotence of God, good. I knew that God is the only cause and creator and that His creation is good, healthy, and harmonious. I knew all that was true of God and His creation was really true of me, God's likeness. I studied the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly and prayed each day, but didn't get any better. I was a bit discouraged.

Then Saturday night I put aside the physical problem and began to study a topic our Sunday School class had decided to research. We wanted to see what the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings say on the relationship of animals to God, and how He cares for them. To aid me in my study, I used the Concordances to the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy. Two statements from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy stood out to me: "God is the Life, or intelligence, which forms and preserves the individuality and identity of animals as well as of men" (p. 550); and (p. 151), "The divine Mind that made man maintains His own image and likeness." As I studied I thought about how these truths applied to me and God's entire creation. Two words especially—preserves and maintains—gave me a great feeling of God's care and love for all that He has created.
