The Christian Science Approach to Business

Business is generally considered merely a commercial pursuit. But Christian Science teaches that true business is spiritual activity. In its human expression it involves Christly qualities of love, intelligence, joy, usefulness, and unselfishness in us and a response to Christly qualities in others. Business is prospered and enriched by translating into human action spiritually mental qualities bestowed on man by his creator. These qualities, expressed, supply human needs.

One can apply to one's business Paul's thought of equality of contribution, expressed in his letter to the Corinthians: "For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened: but by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality." II Cor. 8:13, 14;

To carry this reasoning a step further, it's essential to know that because man is a spiritual idea, made in the likeness of God, he possesses no base or animal qualities with which to evoke or respond to evil. This realization of total good operates as divine law, and its healing effects can annul unethical business practices, cutthroat competition, undue pressure, anxiety, and a host of negative attitudes long associated with the world of business.
