To Listen with the Heart

To listen with the heart is to see and feel and hear with the senses of Love, not matter. Yet often we observe with only the material senses, which hide what is real and spiritual—ours to know. I remember an experience I had years ago that illustrates this.

One Wednesday evening at a testimony meeting in a Church of Christ, Scientist, a woman was giving what seemed to me a far from ideal testimony. I cringed. But a more experienced Christian Scientist touched my arm, leaned over to me, and whispered, "Hear what she's really sharing." Then I heard the woman's gratitude to God. I grasped the spiritual point she wanted to make. And I grew in understanding.

A false sense of self-importance would outline how or what or when or where another should speak. But when we listen with the heart, we keep "silent in humility."Christian Science Hymnal, No. 216; We listen with patience. We search to discern the true message another has to give.
