I've been a schoolteacher for many years
I've been a schoolteacher for many years. Early in my career I had the desire to become a principal, so I took several courses in school administration. Before I was able to complete the work, a change in the state requirements took effect, requiring twice as many courses. Since it didn't seem wise to be involved in such a lengthy program, I discontinued classes, not without a feeling of deep disappointment. I had had an earlier experience in music that came to the same kind of fruitless ending. Now, when this happened in education, I became confused and frustrated.
Then two years ago I went to see a Christian Science practitioner on another matter. In explaining to him why I was there, I said that there always seemed to be something blocking my progress. He referred to Mary Baker Eddy's words in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (p. 491): "Material man is made up of involuntary and voluntary error, of a negative right and a positive wrong, the latter calling itself right." His explanation of this passage was most helpful. It showed me the bad effects of resentful, negative reaction to circumstances. Since becoming aware of this statement in Science and Health, I have seen it operate with scientific exactness and have used it often. When one refuses to react, the natural momentum of thought and activity continues unobstructed. On the other hand, when one agrees with suggestions of failure, he closes the door to opportunity.
As a result of the visit to the practitioner and of my own improved attitude, the whole problem cleared up. A few months later a friend urged me to check into my credentials again. I did. The former requirements for administrative posts were reinstated for a short time. I then took two courses, was issued a license, and have been a vice-principal for two years.
