The sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias (John 6:1)
A large freshwater lake in northern Palestine (anciently called Chinnereth and later Gennesaret), fed by the waters of the Jordan River. Fish from the lake were widely exported, and most important highways in Palestine passed by or near it. Tiberias, on the west shore of the lake, was the capital of Galilee, named for the Roman emperor Tiberius.
